QuickGuide to E-Commerce - Overview
|
E-commerce is not a decision to make lightly. Unlike a static
website, an e-commerce website must be able to interact with
the visitor. Here is a brief description of the seven major
things to consider when thinking about creating an e-commerce
website.
- Traffic...getting users to come to your e-commerce website.
- Marketing...the management and presentation of your products /
services. Once you have a visitor to your site you need to do everything you
can to make sure they actually make a purchase.
- Navigation...E-commerce websites must be easy to navigate. If a
user can't find their way around the site the will be far less likely to
make a purchase.
- Shopping cart...a process that collects the products / services,
totals the order and provides a means for the user to enter their credit
card information. If you sell more than one product a shopping cart is
essential.
- Security...the means of encrypting the order and credit card
information so it can't be intercepted while traveling the open Internet.
- Merchant Account...the banking account that allows you to accept
credit card payments.
- Payment gateway...an interface between your shopping cart and the
credit card company that processes the credit card payment.
- Management...tracking sales, orders and inventory.
Each plays a direct role in how effective your e-commerce
website will be. You should give each careful consideration
before you start to develop the website.
This QuickGuide to E-Commerce covers each of these topics in
turn. Each section contains a general overview of the topic,
links to additional information and additional resources.
